Following the unveiling of their initial 53-man roster, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be in the market for a QB3 on their practice squad.
The Buccaneers named Jalon Daniels as their backup quarterback and released Jake Browning, who has declined to return to the practice squad as the team’s third-string quarterback.
The Bucs could bring back Connor Bazelak, who served as the team’s QB3 in 2025 and spent this offseason in Tampa Bay. But if the Buccaneers opt to bring in an external option, a familiar face could be the most likely option.
Kyle Trask makes sense as QB3 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Buccaneers drafted Kyle Trask in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, and he spent the first four seasons of his career in Tampa Bay.
He appeared in only seven games, almost exclusively in garbage time. He completed just 4-of-11 passes (36%) for 28 yards. While his numbers aren’t impressive, the Bucs aren’t looking for a world beater at QB3. His role would be to provide depth, offer a veteran perspective to the backup quarterback room, and take reps with the scout-team offense during practice.
After the Buccaneers moved on from him last offseason, Trask eventually found a new home with the Atlanta Falcons. That’s an important detail, because their offensive coordinator at the time was Zac Robinson, who is now the Bucs’ offensive coordinator.
Not only does Trask offer familiarity with the offensive system, but he also has some pre-built chemistry with several members of Tampa Bay’s offense, who he practiced with for years. His grasp of the system and relationships with Bucs offensive players would make him a solid fit for the practice squad QB role.
The Buccaneers have no choice but to bring in a third quarterback for the practice squad, and it makes sense that it would be someone who has knowledge of Robinson’s system. While Bazelak remains a logical option, Trask brings a similar knowledge of the system and a higher level of NFL experience.
Tampa Bay is already rolling with an inexperienced rookie as its backup quarterback, which makes it increasingly likely that they’d prefer to add a veteran to the room as QB3. That’s why there’s arguably no better fit for what the team needs than Trask.
After being cut by the Carolina Panthers, Trask finds himself back on the open market. Maybe the best outcome is to go back to where it all started.
