Those details paint the picture of a brazen lowball offer from the Buccaneers. His leadership and moxie are the traits that separate him from other quarterbacks and make him the perfect leader for the Buccaneers. His teammates love to play for him and have embraced his fiery underdog mentality.
It’s not often a guy like that walks through the door, and Tampa Bay risks alienating him by refusing to offer a contract extension that reflects his value.
With Mayfield feeling disrespected by the Buccaneers during contract talks, he now has the perfect opportunity to prove they should have committed to him sooner.
Mayfield enters 2026 with a massive chip on his shoulder and plenty to prove in a contract year. An elite-level season could tip the scales even further in his favor and allow him to command an even more lucrative contract from Tampa Bay next offseason.
