Emeka Egbuka had a strong rookie season after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted him in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Egbuka recorded 63 receptions for 938 yards and six touchdowns, including a game-winning touchdown in the season opener — his first career game.

With Mike Evans leaving Tampa Bay after 12 seasons, the Bucs will need Egbuka to take his game to another level to help replace the production of the franchise legend.

Egbuka is aware of the increased expectations, and he’s focusing on some specific areas as he looks to elevate his game entering his second season.

Emeka Egbuka wants to step up as a leader and become more explosive for Buccaneers

Following mandatory minicamp, Egbuka spoke to reporters and was asked what specific elements of his game he’s working on this offseason.

“I would say just overall explosiveness,” said Egbuka. “‘Making big plays with the ball in my hands… creating great habits when it comes to catching the ball and running after the catch, having strong hands at the catch point. Staying on your feet, that’s a big one. So that’s something that I’m really honing on.”

Egbuka also revealed an improvement he wants to make that has nothing to do with on-field ability or production.

“Stepping more into that leadership role, becoming more vocal. Being someone that the team can look to as a steady source of confidence.”

Seeing Egbuka embrace a leadership role is an encouraging sign. In addition to Evans, the team also lost longtime captain Lavonte David to retirement, meaning the franchise said goodbye to their two longest tenured players.

There’s a real leadership void, and the more players who step up in the locker room, the better. Egbuka was already demonstrating all the signs of a future leader as a rookie, so it’s no surprise to see him stepping up in year two.

Egbuka already started his pro career on a high note, and if his offseason goals come to fruition, allowing him to become more explosive on the field as well as a trusted leader in the locker room, the Bucs will be over the moon with the young rising star.
