The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are loaded at wide receiver. Perhaps that's why other teams continue to sniff around at the position in Tampa, thinking they have expendable players, such as Chris Godwin, for example.
For whatever reason, teams still think that Godwin could be put on the trade block even though it's become crystal clear that the Buccaneers don't have any plans to move the fan favorite. That didn't stop Lyle Graversen of Arrowhead Addict from speculating about a possible trade involving Godwin and the Kansas City Chiefs.
"Godwin is 30 years old and in the last year of his current deal with the Bucs, with a big $33.7 million cap hit this season. He does have a club option for 2027 that would come at about a $30 million cap hit. Godwin has missed part of the past two seasons with injuries, and the Bucs may not feel like they want to invest that much money in Godwin going forward."
Okay. Sure. This part does make some sense. Godwin has dealt with injuries and is closer to the end of his career than the beginning of it. That being said, the Buccaneers are expecting big things from him this year and they need his leadership even more now that Mike Evans is gone.
Buccaneers fans already know this Chris Godwin trade isn't happening
Graversen even nailed exactly why the Bucs wouldn't trade Godwin two paragraphs later.
"If the Bucs think they can compete for the NFC South, they may not want to deal Godwin before the season starts and would prefer to keep their solid group of wideouts intact for Baker Mayfield."
This right here is why the Buccaneers will hold onto Godwin. The NFC South is wide open and Godwin gives this offense the best chance to be productive. Sure, the Bucs still have Emeka Egbuka, Jalen McMillan, and Ted Hurst III but Godwin is the glue that holds this unit together. This team needs him.
Maybe if the Buccaneers get off to an abysmal start, then things could change and Godwin could be on the trade block but even then, with how bad the NFC South has been, it still feels like it'd be a division up for grabs. Chiefs fans can dream about Godwin donning the red and gold all they want but they might want to face the facts -- Godwin probably isn't going anywhere. He'll hopefully retire a Buccaneer.
