The end of an era is upon the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After testing free agency for the first time in his career, Mike Evans decided to leave the only franchise he's ever known to sign a three-year, $60.4 million deal with the San Francisco 49ers.
It's impossible to overstate just how devestating this is on a number of levels. Evans has played the last 12 seasons in Tampa Bay and came so close to spending his entire career in one place. Fewer than five players have done that, and Evans wasn't shy about how much it'd mean to him to join that list.
That's why the statement from his agent explaining why he left stings so much. As Deryk Gilmore put it, Evans' decision to leave didn't come down to money but instead his belief that the 49ers offer him a better chance at winning than the Bucs do.
It's a scathing indictment, and the teammates he's leaving behind are starting to pick up the pieces.
One of the first reactions came from Chris Godwin, who has been Evans' runningmate on offense ever since he was drafted. Godwin, who took less money to return to the Buccaneers last year when he was a free agent, spoke for fans everywhere without even needing to say a word.

He wasn't the only Bucs player to have an immediate reaction to Evans leaving. Tristan Wirfs, who now becomes the most decorated member of the offense, was right alongside Bucs fans in his disbelief over how things ended.

It's pretty clear that nobody is happy about this, and it doesn't seem that Evans is the one anyone is mad at. Fans have been calling for Todd Bowles to be fired for years and the historic collapse at the end of last season seemed to present the best opportunity for ownership to do that.
Bowles wasn't fired, though, and it's not hard to not see Evans' decision being motivated by that. Whether or not that's true is beside the point, because the rage has broken containment and every little reaction is being viewed through that lens.
We're still in the blast radius, which makes thinking rationally nearly impossible given the emotional stakes involved, and the fallout is only just starting to sprinkle in. This loss will take some time to get over, but it's reminder that there's still a ton of talent in Tampa Bay that didn't leave.
Godwin and Wirfs are near the top of the list, but guys like Emeka Egbuka and Jalen McMillan are now in a position to step up and shine. This is also a franchise that thrives on playing with a chip on its shoulder and someone to prove wrong -- it just turns out that the someone in this scenario is the greatest offensive player to have ever put on a Buccaneers uniform.
