The Washington Commanders are off to a 1-1 start, and they recently lost veteran running back Austin Ekeler to an Achilles injury. With Ekeler sidelined for the year, the Commanders needed some running back help, so they called a former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back. Washington signed Chase Edmonds to their practice squad, rebuilding their depth.

The veteran running back has been in the league since 2018, and he most recently played with the Buccaneers. Now, he’ll help the Commanders try to put together another great season.

Commanders sign former Buccaneers running back Chase Edmonds

Edmonds was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the fourth round of the 2018 Draft, and had solid production during his four years with the Cardinals. In 57 games, he rushed for 1,551 yards and nine touchdowns, while also catching 128 passes for 921 yards and five additional touchdowns.

After Arizona, Edmonds signed with the Miami Dolphins, and he was traded to the Denver Broncos the same year. Across both teams that season, Edmonds rushed for just 245 yards and two touchdowns. After that 2022 season, the veteran running back signed with the Buccaneers. In 2023, he played 13 games for Tampa Bay, carrying the ball 49 times for 176 yards, while also catching 14 passes for 81 yards. Edmonds did re-sign with the Bucs in 2024, but spent the season on injured reserve with a knee injury.

Now healthy, he’s joining the Commanders’ running back room with Jacory Croskey-Merritt, a promising rookie who’s already a fan favorite, Jeremy McNichols, and Chris Rodriguez Jr. Edmonds is currently on Washington’s practice squad, but he could get activated to the active roster and contribute. It’ll be interesting to see if the former Buccaneer can carve out a contributor role on the talented Commanders team.
