The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have spent years looking for an impact pass rusher, and it seems they’ve finally got their guy in David Walker.

The Buccaneers haven’t had a player reach double-digit sacks since Shaq Barrett accomplished the feat in 2021. Since then, the team has tried and failed to add another quarterback hunter to help generate an effective pass rush.

Walker is just three games into his NFL career, but he’s already shown flashes of being the exact type of player the Buccaneers have been missing defensively.

David Walker is proving he’s more than just a training camp standout for the Buccaneers

Over the last few years, the Buccaneers spent premium draft picks on Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and Chris Braswell and signed Haason Reddick to a $14 million deal. None of those moves panned out, and Tampa Bay’s pass rush remained dormant.

Last year, they drafted Walker in the fourth round of the NFL Draft. He was a small-school flier with big production that caught the Bucs’ eye, totaling 244 tackles, 82.5 tackles for loss, 39.0 sacks, eight passes defensed, six forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery in his college career.

Walker stood out throughout his first training camp, but a torn ACL ended his rookie season before it began.

He came back this offseason without missing a beat. Walker even had a stretch where he recorded a sack in nine consecutive training camp practices.

But the Buccaneers had seen this movie before. They needed to see if Walker’s dominance could translate to real games — not just training camp hype.

Walker has answered the bell. He’s recorded a sack in back-to-back games, despite only seeing the field in a rotational capacity. But Todd Bowles said earlier this week that Walker had "definitely" earned more snaps, so fans can expect to see more of him going forward.

This offseason, the Buccaneers drafted Rueben Bain Jr. in the first round and signed Al-Quadin Muhammad in free agency. But it’s been Walker, rather than the big-name offseason additions, that has had the biggest impact so far.

Walker has a deep bag of pass rush moves and looked dominant against the Vikings in Week 3 while Bain was out with an injury.

If he can continue to make an impact as a pass rusher, he has a chance to become a cornerstone defensive player in Tampa Bay going forward. It’s a small sample size, but Walker is already looking like another Day 3 gem discovered by Jason Licht and the front office.
