The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have spent much of the offseason navigating tricky contract disputes with core players.
After failing to reach a long-term agreement with quarterback Baker Mayfield, the Buccaneers are now facing another standoff with defensive tackle Vita Vea, who requested a trade as he seeks a contract extension.
Vea’s contract saga just took another ugly turn, leaving his status for the 2026 season up in the air.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler spent a lot of time at One Buc Place last week, interviewing Baker Mayfield about his contract and sticking around to gather intel from his sources around the organization.
Fowler’s latest report paints a bleak picture when it comes to Vea and his ongoing contract dispute.
“I’m told Vea is very dug in here and is prepared to wait this out… he currently has “zero” intention to play under his deal or without a trade, I’m told. The Bucs have no plans to trade him despite league interest. Something has to give.”
If the Bucs were hoping they could just wait things out and that Vea would eventually end his hold-in and play out his contract year, that doesn’t seem to be the case.
Would Vea really sit out during regular season games without a new contract? That would be a massive blow to Todd Bowles’ defense, which counts on Vea as the unit’s anchor.
Vea has been one of the NFL’s elite nose tackles over the years and has played a major role in the Buccaneers’ consistently stout run defense. Tampa Bay has finished in the top five against the run in six of Vea’s eight seasons.
He’s not just a run stuffer either, he offers legitimate pass rush upside. Vea has recorded 17 sacks over the last three seasons. That’s more than Jalen Carter has in the same stretch, and he just became the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history on a deal that more than doubled Vea’s current annual value.
According to Spotrac, there are currently 19 defensive tackles set to earn at least $20 million in the upcoming season. Vea isn’t one of them, as he’s set to earn just $18 million this season.
What he brings to the Bucs’ defense is worthy of a deal that would make him one of the highest-paid players at his position. He’s likely seeking a deal that reflects his true value and pays him in the range of $24 million annually, which would put him within the top 10.
If the Buccaneers aren’t willing to meet his demands, and Vea is truly refusing to budge and return to the field without a new deal, it could force Tampa Bay to trade the veteran defensive tackle — a move they absolutely don’t want to make. The hope is the two sides can find a middle ground, even if it means giving Vea a significant raise for the 2026 season before allowing him to enter free agency next offseason.
