Buccaneers social media account cooked Baker Mayfield haters after win over Lions
For the second straight year, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are starting the season 2-0, but there’s something about this team that feels different.
The Bucs marched into Ford Field and got some revenge on the Detroit Lions for that playoff loss last year. Baker Mayfield looked magnificent, the defense forced two Jared Goff turnovers, and Tampa Bay earned a huge statement win on the road. However, the real win might have been had by the social media team.
Baker Mayfield signed a $100 million contract this offseason and the deal was both hailed as a victory lap while also trolled as not being enough to take Tampa Bay over the hump. Despite the fact that Baker helped get the Bucs to the NFC Divisional Round last year, more than a few experts argued that the Bucs hadn’t done enough to get the team in a position to compete with the best the NFC had to offer.
If Sunday’s win wasn’t a loud enough clap back at that, the Bucs’ social media team took things the rest of the way.
Buccaneers called out everyone who doubted them this offseason
One of the highlights of the video was continuing to show how everyone on NFL.com picked the Lions to win the game. The video also showed people like Bill Belichick and Stephen A. Smith saying Mayfield wasn't a top-tier quarterback. We also got to see clips of Mayfield's smiling face and other brief little troll jobs at the Lions. A+ to the social media team for this.
Mayfield might not have thrown for as many yards as Jared Goff did (and he was sacked five times compared to Goff's zero) but he did enough to help his team win the game, including that incredible 11-yard touchdown run. The Bucs are 2-0 now after this win and showed that they can go into tough environments and win.
Throw in that the Bucs were tired of hearing about the Lions following that playoff loss in January and this win felt even better.
Mayfield has been doubted since the Bucs signed him over a year ago and he keeps proving those doubters wrong. You'd think at some point people would, you know, stop doubting him but hey, as long as they do that, Mayfield will have motivation to prove the naysayers wrong.
Up next for the undefeated Buccaneers is a home game against the Denver Broncos. Let's hope that Baker keeps baking and proving those doubters wrong.
