Todd Bowles is entering a make-or-break season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2026.
He enters his fifth season as head coach on the hot seat after a disastrous 8-9 season in 2025. Through four seasons, Bowles has led the Bucs to a 35-33 regular-season record and a 1-3 postseason record.
There’s growing frustration with the team’s mediocrity under his leadership, and many believe the Buccaneers have hit their ceiling as a fringe playoff team incapable of going on a deep playoff run. But while Bowles has become one of the most criticized head coaches in the NFL, it’s fair to question whether he’s been given the personnel required to build a dominant team.
Entering 2026, however, Bowles is equipped with arguably the best roster since he became head coach in Tampa Bay after the team invested heavily in revamping its defense this offseason. If he can get his unit to play as good as they look on paper, the Bucs could emerge as dark horse playoff contenders.

The Buccaneers went all-in this offseason on ensuring Bowles has the pieces at his disposal to scheme up a dominant defense this season.
They went out in free agency and signed veteran linebacker Alex Anzalone and pass rusher Al-Quadin Muhammad, who is coming off an 11-sack season with the Detroit Lions.
They also added defensive tackles A’Shawn Robinson and Rakeem Nunez-Roches, a duo who Bowles believes will help bring a much-needed attitude and accountability to the defense.
In the NFL Draft, they used their first-round pick on edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr., their second-round pick on linebacker Josiah Trotter, and their fourth-round pick on cornerback Keionte Scott. All three players are expected to contribute immediately as day one starters, giving Bowles several young pieces to further bolster his unit.
The biggest factors handicapping Tampa Bay’s defense have been poor inside linebacker play and the lack of an effective pass rush. The Buccaneers have completely overhauled those position groups, with Anzalone and Trotter expected to be the two new starting linebackers while Bain and Muhammad add more firepower to the pass rush rotation.
The team also was lacking the leadership, attitude, and accountability that characterized some of the best defenses in Bucs history. As mentioned earlier, Bowles believes they’ve addressed that with no-nonsense veterans like Robinson and Nacho.
Nearly everything holding back this defense was addressed this offseason. Bowles has the deepest and most talented roster of his tenure as head coach, and now it’s time to see if he can make the most of it by building a dominant defense capable of leading this team on a deep playoff run.
