Todd Bowles has no excuse for keeping the Buccaneers’ best pass rusher on the bench

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have finally found an impact pass rusher in David Walker, but the budding star can hardly get on the field.

Walker leads the Buccaneers with four sacks on the season, including two takedowns of Aaron Rodgers in Week 6. But he played just 35% of the defensive snaps, and is yet to register 30 defensive snaps in a single game.

Walker has earned a starting role as the team’s best pass rusher, and Todd Bowles should give him more playing time so he has more opportunities to make his presence felt.

David Walker is dominating as a pass rusher despite limited playing time

Walker currently ranks as Pro Football Focus’ seventh-highest-graded edge rusher, and his pass-rushing production has been nothing short of elite.

“Bucs OLB David Walker (4 sacks, 15 pressures) has the highest pass rush win rate at 26% per PFF among ALL edge rushers through Week 6 with a minimum of 40 pass rush snaps. Walker is ahead of Aidan Hutchinson (23.4%), Maxx Crosby (20.3%) and Nick Bosa (20%),” wrote Pewter Report.

Bowles has said that Walker has earned more playing time, but he also said earlier this offseason that Walker must improve as a run defender before becoming an every-down player.

Bowles prioritizes stopping the run, and it’s paid off with the Bucs currently ranked No. 2 in rushing defense, allowing just 75 yards per game. Since Bowles became the defensive coordinator in 2019, Tampa Bay has boasted a top-five rushing defense in six of his eight seasons with the team, and they’re heading for another podium finish.

So if Bowles feels that Walker is best utilized as a situational pass rusher in obvious passing situations — perhaps there’s a method to his madness, and it’s paying dividends so far on the stat sheet.

Still, with Yaya Diaby and Rueben Bain Jr. failing to make much of an impact this season, the Bucs would benefit from giving Walker more snaps. He hasn’t gotten many opportunities this year, and he’s still making the most of every time he’s on the field.

The Buccaneers haven’t had a player reach double-digit sacks since Shaq Barrett in 2021. Walker is on pace for an 11-sack season, and that total could climb with increased playing time.

The Buccaneers have finally found their long-awaited game-wrecker off the edge in Walker. He’s already producing at an elite level just six games into his NFL career, and Tampa Bay has every reason to give him a bigger role.
