Tampa Bay Buccaneers nose tackle Vita Vea is one of the best in the business and irreplaceable, so when Bucs fans found out that negotiations between the team's best defensive player and general manager Jason Licht had collapsed, just as Baker Mayfield's did, they became even more concerned.
The Buccaneers organization is already reeling from losing two of its biggest franchise legends in Mike Evans and Lavonte David, with the latter pillar of the defense retiring and the former star wide receiver electing to join Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers to pursue Super Bowl glory elsewhere in the NFC.
Losing Vea, though, would have been even worse, because Vea is still at the peak of his powers and one of the most productive two way nose tackles in the NFL - obviously an elite run stuffer but also an underrated source of internal pressure. And that he was still good last season despite playing for a horrendous defense only made him that much more important to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Vita Vea will not leave the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hanging
Despite rampant trade speculation and a seeming lack of communication and progress between the two sides, Vita Vea has decided to do the right thing by Bucs fans in the end and not leave them in a lurch just weeks before the 2026 NFL regular season starts.
Vea has not settled his long term future in Tampa Bay yet, but he has agreed to sign a new one year, $30 million contract extension that will keep him in the Bay Area through the 2026 and 2027 NFL seasons, which means the Bucs will still have to do this all over again next year but at least get two more years out of their Super Bowl champion.
Although Vea had been holding in on the team for several weeks, it looks like he realized that leaving Tampa Bay right now would be a bad, bad decision. Not only do the Bucs need him on the field and for his leadership after losing Lavonte David and Mike Evans, but Vea would have sullied his incredible legacy with the Bucs.
This is a guy who should be staying in Tampa Bay for his entire career like David and not pulling an Evans that somewhat sours him. By agreeing to this deal, which will likely lead to a new one next year, and not taking a trade to somewhere pastures are not necessarily greener, Vea preserves his unique legacy with the franchise.
