The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Vita Vea are running out of time to come to a resolution on Vea’s contract for the 2026 season.
The veteran defensive tackle is set to enter a contract year, but he’s seeking an extension prior to the season. The Buccaneers apparently weren’t willing to meet his demands, so Vea requested a trade out of Tampa Bay if the two sides are unable to come to an agreement.
With only a month until Tampa Bay's season opener in Cincinnati, Vea continues to hold in as he awaits a resolution on his contract. He also took to social media to send the Buccaneers a crystal-clear message about his value.
Vita Vea wants a new contract from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Vea is not a frequent social media user. In fact, his latest post on X was his first of the entire 2026 calendar year — and it spoke volumes.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo shared a post comparing Vea’s pressure and sack totals over the last two seasons, via Pro Football Focus, to some of the NFL’s premier defensive tackles who signed lucrative contracts this offseason.
Vea’s stats compared favorably to Jeffery Simmons, Quinnen Williams, Jalen Carter, and Dexter Lawrence. But his current contract doesn’t quite reflect that.

Vea responded to the post with nothing more than a shrug emoji. Not a word was spoken — or tweeted — but it got the message across loud and clear. Vea’s production stacks up with the highest-paid defensive tackles in the league, and he wants to be paid accordingly.

NFL Network’s Maurice Jones-Drew spoke with Vea after practice and came away with the impression that the defensive tackle is still hopeful the two sides can reach a resolution.
“When we were leaving practice, I got a chance to talk to Vita Vea… He is excited, he’s hoping the talks continue there on his contract. He’s still coaching his guys, we saw the defensive line look really good with Rueben Bain and he’s excited hopefully to get a chance to get out there and play with him,” Jones-Drew said.
That certainly sounds like a player who would prefer to remain in Tampa Bay. Vea may have requested a trade, but it appears his primary objective is getting the contract situation resolved and being fairly compensated by the Buccaneers.
Vea has a point. He’s been one of the NFL’s most productive defensive tackles, and there’s no arguing his importance to the Bucs’ defense. Vea is the centerpiece of everything Todd Bowles wants to do defensively, starting with stopping the run. Tampa Bay has fielded the No. 1 rush defense in the NFL since Vea became a full-time starter in 2019, and they’ve finished top-five against the run in six of his eight seasons.

Sure, he’s entering his age-31 season, so he shouldn’t expect to be paid as much as Carter (25 years old) or Williams (28) on a multi-year deal. Still, at the very least, Vea deserves a raise that pays him like the elite defensive tackle he is.
There are currently 11 defensive tackles set to earn at least $22 million in total cash this season. If Tampa Bay gives its star defensive tackle a $4–6 million pay bump to place him among the top 10 at his position, it should result in a resolution that makes everyone happy.
Vea would get the raise he deserves entering his contract year and could get another hefty payday in free agency next March. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay gets to hold onto the anchor of its defense, at least for this season, and finally put this contract saga to bed.
