One of the most puzzling developments of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ contract dispute with Vita Vea this offseason was seeing some fans turn their frustration toward Todd Bowles.
It’s been a chaotic offseason in Tampa Bay, with Baker Mayfield’s failed contract negotiations, Vea’s trade request, and the departures of Mike Evans and Lavonte David. Somehow, Bowles became a scapegoat in the middle of it all.
Vea clearly doesn’t see things that way.
After signing his contract extension, the veteran defensive tackle spoke to reporters and took a strong stance in support of his head coach.
Vita Vea defends Todd Bowles with blunt message to Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans
Look, it’s valid to have some concerns about Bowles as the Buccaneers head coach. The team has a 35-33 regular-season record and a 1-3 postseason record since he took over as head coach in 2022.
Hovering around .500 and being a habitual first-round playoff exit is not the standard that Bucs fans have for their team.
But at some point, the players have to be responsible for the team’s failures just as much as the head coach. Bowles can only do so much if his players aren’t executing.
No matter how frustrated fans may be with the team’s results under Bowles’ leadership, it’s unfair to blame him for everything that goes wrong within the organization. That’s the message Vea made sure to send to Bucs fans during his press conference.
“I want to set the record straight. We all love Bowles. It is not what he is doing. He is telling us what to do and giving us all the answers to the test and it is on us players to be able to go out there and execute what he is telling us to do. He is always putting us into the best position to play…If anything, blame us players for not executing. Bowles puts us into the best position to play. I even told Bowles, ‘the day you retire is the day I retire.”
That’s about as glowing an endorsement as you’ll hear from a player about his head coach, and it’s one Bucs fans needed to hear.
That’s quite the endorsement of Todd Bowles from Vita Vea.

It also sends quite the message to the Bucs fans that tried to nonsensically blame Bowles for Vea’s contract situation and trade request. https://t.co/Eay6qaEhDe
Lavonte David echoed Vea’s sentiment earlier this offseason, declaring that if Bowles was fired by the Buccaneers, David would leave with him.
Vea has been with Bowles since 2019, when Bowles was the Buccaneers’ defensive coordinator and Vea was entering his second NFL season. Bowles played a significant role in Vea’s development as a young player, and the two have been together ever since.
Since 2019, Vea leads all nose tackles with 32 sacks and Tampa Bay boasts the NFL’s No. 1 rush defense in that span — thanks in large part to Vea. The two also won a Super Bowl together in 2020.
Considering their history, it’s no surprise Vea has such a strong loyalty to his head coach.
However you feel about Bowles, there’s no denying that the team, especially its core players, love him and are fully bought in.
The results haven’t always reflected that, but Vea’s message makes one thing clear: this is a locker room standing ten toes down behind their leader.
