Emeka Egbuka is already showing signs of a breakout season

Entering his second season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Emeka Egbuka is looking to consistently perform at the prolific level he showed during the first half of his rookie year. Egbuka was taking the NFL by storm and emerged as an early frontrunner for Offensive Rookie of the Year honors before his production declined later in the season.

Still, Egbuka finished with 63 catches for 938 yards and six touchdowns, averaging an impressive 14.9 yards per catch. That kind of production from a rookie is nothing to sneeze at. 

Offensive coordinator Zac Robinson came to Tampa Bay with a plan to get the most out of Egbuka on a consistent basis this year. Robinson has Egbuka playing the Z receiver role, which aligns perfectly with his strengths as a player. 

“You look at the routes he’s really successful on. Post routes, dig routes, slant routes. These are some outrageous success rates. Really high success rates for him. And that’s the main diet that the Z receiver in this offense will run. I love the role change. I love the routes he’s going to be running,"  said Matt Harmon on his Reception Perception podcast.

It's only been one week, but all signs are pointing toward a breakout season for Egbuka.

In the season opener, Egbuka had five catches for a team-high 63 yards. While those numbers don’t jump off the stat sheet,  it’s the deeper numbers that indicate his potential for a leap in production.

Egbuka accounted for 65.1% of Tampa Bay’s air yards in Week 1, which led the NFL. With Mike Evans out of the picture after joining the San Francisco 49ers, the door is open for Egbuka to become Baker Mayfield’s top target, and he did just that in the season opener.

Yahoo Sports’ Hayden Winks broke down Egbuka’s film from Week 1 and came away encouraged by his usage in Tampa Bay's new offensive system.

“Emeka Egbuka had a very Rams coded role in Week 1. Lots of motion, free releases, modern routes. Worked intermediate and downfield plenty,” Winks wrote.

Between his increased involvement and an offensive scheme designed to utilize his strengths, the Buccaneers have put Egbuka in position to blossom in his second season. He has a legitimate opportunity to establish himself as the centerpiece of Tampa Bay’s passing game.

Egbuka already put together an impressive rookie season in 2025, and his Week 1 usage suggests the Buccaneers are prepared to give him an even bigger role in 2026.
