Emeka Egbuka had an impressive rookie year for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
He finished his debut season with 63 catches for 938 yards and six touchdowns, and he could’ve been even more productive if the team put him in a better position to succeed.
Egbuka was held back from reaching even bigger heights due to inconsistent usage. As injuries ravaged the wide receiver room, the rookie was forced to wear many hats rather than settling into one role.
Transitioning into the NFL is hard enough for any rookie, and it’s even harder when you’re being asked to regularly switch between all four wide receiver alignments.
Tampa Bay’s new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson took notice, and he has a plan for Egbuka that could lead to a year two breakout.
Emeka Egbuka will thrive as the Z wide receiver in Buccaneers’ new-look offense
Reporters spoke to Robinson after rookie minicamp and asked the play caller if Egbuka will continue to serve as a do-it-all receiver or if he’ll settle into one role.
“We’ll settle him into one spot, kind of our Z spot,” said Robinson.
Robinson noted that Egbuka might still move around based on formation, but that he’ll finally have a consistent home as the Z.
So what is a Z wide receiver? The Z receiver lines up off the line of scrimmage, typically on the same side as the tight end. They’re usually the receiver sent in motion pre-snap.
Matt Harmon, who analyzes wide receivers on his Reception Perception podcast, explained why Egbuka’s role change is so beneficial.

“Emeka Egbuka is going to play the Z receiver role in this offense, which is like what Cooper Kupp played,” said Harmon. “You’re going to kick into the slot a good bit but mostly you’re going to be an off ball outside receiver.”
Harmon believes the move is a natural fit because it aligns with Egbuka’s strengths as a route runner.
Last year, 64% of Egbuka’s snaps came on the line of scrimmage, which simply isn't where he shines as a receiver. Now, he’ll be able to do what he does best.
“You look at the routes he’s really successful on. Post routes, dig routes, slant routes. These are some outrageous success rates. Really high success rates for him. And that’s the main diet that this Z receiver in this offense will run,” said Harmon. “I love the role change. I love the routes he’s going to be running.”
Transitioning into this new role will unlock the best version of Egbuka, and the timing couldn’t be better for the Buccaneers.
With Mike Evans moving on to the San Francisco 49ers in free agency, the Bucs will be counting on big things from their 2025 first-round pick.
Between the increased target share and a role that fits his play style perfectly, Emeka Egbuka could be in for a monster season. He has a real chance to emerge as Baker Mayfield’s No. 1 wide receiver, and all the ingredients are there for a year two leap.
