The Buccaneers are set to bring back running back Jacquizz Rodgers

More from The Pewter Plank

The Buccaneers look like they will be taking a “Quizz” next year. Sorry for the bad pun.

Jenna Laine of ESPN is reporting this morning that the Bucs and Jacquizz Rodgers are expected to come to terms on a contract. It cannot become official until free agency opens on Thursday afternoon, and she had no hints as far as the terms of the deal.

We know the job Rodgers did, coming in after the season started and leading the team in rushing. On just 129 carries, he led the team with 560 rushing yards. He looked positively dominant in back to back 100 yard rushing performances against the Panthers and 49ers.

If this does play out, does spell the beginning of the end for Doug Martin? Obviously we don’t know what is going to happen in the draft at this point, and the potential of Dalvin Cook could do a lot to answer the above question. But it has to come up. Martin has been inconsistent even when healthy. Add the suspension to the mix and the opinion of him in Tampa has to have changed, it’s only natural.

I have written here at the Pewter Plank that Rodgers belongs on this team in 2017 and beyond. He would be a far lower cost option to Martin and showed glimpses of being more explosive than Martin. They pulled him essentially off of the street last year to lead the team in rushing, and this is a match that is simple. Rodgers belongs here and the Bucs need him.
